Amano Appearing on Food Network — Unwrapped
5 February 2009 in Info
Last March, the Food Network came to visit our little factory. We spent 12 long arduous hours filming — from 7:00am until 7:00pm. It was completely exhausting. Now I know why all those Hollywood Starlets have their own private trailers. All this was for the show we all love to watch — Unwrapped.
Since then, we have been on pins and needles as to when our episode will air. Will it air in the late summer setting us up for the fall? Will it air prior to the holidays? Christmas? Well, as it turns out, there is no other holiday that speaks chocolate like Valentine’s Day and the Food Network decided that that is the perfect time to air our episode.
So, if you happen to tune in to the Food Network on February 9th, you can see our humble factory. Or at least our humble factory as it was a year ago.
We have actually grown quite a bit since the show first filmed. The week after the filming we moved much of our equipment into the unit next door to make room for our new winnowing machine. (By new, I mean built in the 1920′s-1930′s all out of mahogany and maple and imported from Madrid Spain new.) Now, we take up three units in our building. One is used for roasting, the next is for refining and conching, and the final we use for shipping. Come May however, that last and final unit will be full of machinery as well — two more beautiful conches that I will spend most of the summer refurbishing, some melting tanks, melangeurs, and a beautiful 1930′s roller mill. I have no idea where we will do our shipping after that.
So be sure to tune into Unwrapped on February 9th! It will, I’m sure, be repeated throughout the week but I don’t have the schedule.
Let me know what you think — we have not seen it so have no idea what to expect!

Congratulations to Amano Chocolate from Slow Food Utah. It is really cool to see you guys featured on the Food Network. I’m adding a little something about that to our Website.
Art and Clark,
Just saw “Unwrapped”….so happy for you! I only wish that we could’ve seen the factory for the entire half hour (I mean, how unique or interesting is an oreo pie crust, really?).
And so the education around fine American-made chocolate continues….way to go!!

Art: We just missed the Unwrapped episode by about 5 minutes!!! CONGRATULATIONS!! Hope it airs again soon! Love the website too!!
We were amazingly pleased with how it came off. I was very surprised at how they raved about our chocolate at the end. They don’t normally do that sort of thing. So even though it was a short segment we couldn’t be happier.
I just wish it was available online somewhere so we could share it with people.
I would really like to se this show. Even though we live in Europe. Do you know when it will be online over the internet. Everyone is talking good about the Amano chocolate. I would really like to see how it is made! Good luck with the new types of chocolate you are planning!
My husband and I are originally from Bountiful and were surprised to see your chocolates – we weren’t aware there was such a neat chocolate artisan near our hometown! Now I know what to get my husband for his birthday in May.

Saw you on Food Network like so many others. I can’t wait to try some of your chocolate. Do you offer tours of your facility? I’ve very interested in the chocolate making process.
We aren’t really setup for tours right now unfortunately. When we’re in production we just can’t have people around the equipment for safety and sanitary reasons.
Hi Art,The segment on Unwrapped was well done! Too bad it was done before the new packiging. I believe that the impact would have been greater. Anyhow,It is very exciting to know that somehow in a small way I am related to your operation. Whenever you get a chance give me a call. There is something that you might be interested in…Best Wishes
Great segment on the Food Network. Wanted to try the chocolate but $10 for shipping for a couple of bars to try out? Consider offering shipping options other than FedEx.
If we live near your facility how can we buy chocolate in Orem…or do we just have to order it also?
We’re in the process of finding some local stores to carry us. We’re available all over the Salt Lake City region in most of the high end grocery stores like Tony Caputo’s Market, Liberty Heights Fresh, Whole Foods, Emigration Market, The Store, and Pirate-O’s.
This week we’re allowing people to stop by the factory to pick up chocolate for Valentine’s. But normally we don’t do that just because we’re not setup here to sell. As soon as we have a local store carrying us I’ll put up a post here at the blog. Unfortunately there just aren’t the high end grocery stores here in Utah County. I usually drive up to Salt Lake whenever I’m cooking a nice meal to get ingredients. Hopefully that’ll be changing soon.
Paul:
We actually have a super deal with FedEx. So much so in fact that FedEx is noticeably less expensive than UPS. In addition, the quality of FedEx’s service is far superior to UPS.
Normally shipping is less than $10 so I’m not sure why it is that — it depends a bit where you live of course. I’d have to have your address to be able to comment further (you can e-mail us at : amano@amanochocolate.com)
